At heart, my only mistress is music.

We are not made for marriage, we artists. We are seldom normal, and our life...
– Maurice Ravel
Rosenthal was surprised when Ravel arranged to meet him in a brasseriefrequented by ladies: “….What he called ‘ladies’ were, in fact, prostitutes and indeed … I saw several of these ‘ladies’ making signs at him; they knew him very well and he gave them a very friendly wave, saying ‘Bonjour, bonjour’. I think it was a sort of outlet. …It...
You see, an artist has to be very careful when he wants to marry someone,...
– Maurice Ravel
“From childhood he had a particular liking for minute objects, miniatures, the tiny world of figurines, little things that worked by clockwork, mechanical birds ‘whose heart-beats he felt’ and miniscule Japanese gardens which evoked for him the giants of the forest.”
“Even when he was wasted by illness, Ravel never appeared unkempt even among his closest friends. All his life he kept the perfect, discriminating taste which led him to match his braces to his blue or pink silk shirts, much to the astonishment of performers whom he would rehearse in his shirtsleeves. …In Chicago a major concert was delayed for nearly an hour because Ravel refused to...
Oh, PS I just reached 420 posts, el oh el.
[On Ravel c1898] He wore “favoris [sideburns], with voluminous hair that exaggerated the contrast between his significantly proportioned head and his tiny body. He liked showy ties and frilly shirts.” [Early 1920s] “The years had removed, along with the frilly shirts and the side-whiskers, his small man’s haughtiness. His hair, now a mixture of white and black, crowned him...
“He was something of a dandy, anxious to follow fashion or even to set it. He dressed very carefully and he had a penchant for nice ties, the choice of which was often the subject of endless discussion. This trait, very marked early on, and the constant, meticulous elegance which followed, helped Ravel to create an appearance and to carry the mask he ever used to thwart all invasion of his...
“….What place had Ravel for love? It seemed that there was none. ….One day I said to him: ‘Maurice, you ought to marry. Nobody understands and loves children as you do. Get rid of your hermit life and have a real home.’ Ravel replied: ‘Love never rises above the licentious.’ This ‘licentiousness’ he was willing, within moderation, to allow to...
Okay, I saw this and thought it was funny.
The Gaga Law (RAH)² (AH)³ + RO (MA + MAMA) + (GA)² + OOH(LA)² = Bad Romance.
I often find myself snagging much more than a giggle at the occasional math joke.
Sufjan On Knitting
Emmie Magazine: Do people find it weird that you knit?
Sufjan: I think some people find it weird, especially if I go home. I had some knitting in Martha Stewart because a friend of mine works for her and they do a lot of stories on knitting, probably once or twice a year. So I did all this knitting for the magazine, and I made the mistake of telling my step-mom about it, so now everyone knows. That is kind of what I'm known for, that I knit for Martha Stewart Living. I do so many other interesting things, things that I'm proud of, I kind of get annoyed. So I kind of don't knit in public anymore. I just started to get really insecure about it and people just assume a lot about it.
